Mental Health / Sleep & Insomnia

Better sleep starts with understanding what is keeping you awake.

Insomnia can be linked to stress, anxiety, depression, mood episodes, trauma, medications, pain, substance use, sleep habits, or medical sleep disorders. Treatment begins with identifying likely contributors.

Understanding insomnia

Sleep problems are common — and treatable.

Nearly everyone has an occasional bad night. Insomnia becomes a health concern when trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early persists and starts to affect your days.

Sleep and mental health run in both directions: anxiety, depression, mood episodes, and trauma can disrupt sleep, and poor sleep can deepen each of them. Habits and conditioning play a role too. Over time the bed can become associated with frustration instead of rest, and short-term fixes — long naps, late caffeine, a drink to wind down — can quietly keep the cycle going.

Because the causes are layered, care at Icare aims to identify your likely contributors before reaching for a solution. The most useful plan is the one aimed at the right cause.

When to seek help

Signs your sleep deserves a closer look.

  • 01

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking far too early on most nights, for weeks or longer

  • 02

Daytime effects — fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, or nodding off unintentionally

  • 03

Worry about sleep itself that builds as bedtime approaches

  • 04

Relying on alcohol, cannabis, or leftover medications to force sleep

  • 05

Loud snoring, gasping, or pauses in breathing that a partner has noticed

  • 06

Mood changes, anxiety, or pain that seem tangled up with poor nights

Your first visit

What the first conversation covers.

Expect practical questions rather than judgment. The aim is a clear picture of your nights and your days.

  1. 01

Your sleep story: schedule, bedtime routine, what nighttime waking looks like, and how long this has been going on.

  2. 02

What may be feeding it: caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, substance use, medications, supplements, and evening screen or work habits.

  3. 03

Health screening: mood, anxiety, trauma symptoms, pain, and medical conditions that commonly disturb sleep.

  4. 04

A check for warning signs — such as heavy snoring or pauses in breathing — that may point toward a medical sleep evaluation.

  5. 05

A starting plan: the changes worth trying first, what to track before your next visit, and when follow-up makes sense.

How care is planned

The plan may go beyond a sleep medicine.

Depending on the evaluation, care may include structured changes to sleep habits and schedules, behavioral therapy approaches for insomnia, treatment of an underlying mental-health or medical condition, review and adjustment of current medications, and referral for a sleep study or specialty evaluation when indicated.

Common questions

Questions people often ask about sleep care.

Will I be prescribed sleeping pills?

Not automatically, and no specific prescription is promised. Sedating medication can be appropriate in some situations, but benefits, risks, interactions, and your history all matter — and other approaches are often considered first.

Should I track my sleep before the visit?

It helps when you can. Even a week of simple notes — rough bedtime, wake time, naps, and caffeine — gives the clinician a clearer starting picture than memory alone. Paper notes are enough; nothing formal is required.

What if it turns out to be sleep apnea or another medical disorder?

Then that becomes part of the plan. Icare can refer you for a sleep study or specialty evaluation when indicated and continue coordinating the rest of your care alongside it.
